CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION
Goal 6: The United Nations has determined that access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right. More than two billion people in the world lack access to water that is free from health risks. Eighty countries provided access to clean water for more than 99% of their populations by 2017. The number of the world's population lacking access to clean water decreased from 20% to about 10%, from 2000 to 2017. The main indicator of the sanitation target is "the proportion of the population using safely managed sanitation services, including handwashing facilities with soap and water". Current statistics in the 2017 baseline estimates by the Joint Monitoring Program for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP) indicate that 4.5 billion people do not currently manage sanitation safely. GMP is a joint UNICEF-WHO program that collects data to monitor progress on Sustainable Development Goal 6.
